The SF Giants lost a series over the weekend to the Los Angeles Dodgers. As if that was not bad enough, they also lost first baseman Dominic Smith to injury. On the positive side, they could be getting some pitchers back soon.
SF Giants injury updates: Smith, Whisenhunt, Roupp
Dominic Smith's hamstring
During Friday night's game, Smith made a tremendous defensive effort by stretching as far as he could to catch a throw from third baseman Matt Chapman. The effort resulted in an out and prevented a run from scoring but it also resulted in Smith injuring his hamstring which has landed him on the 10-day IL.
The team called up Jerar Encarnacion, a player who has had more than his fair share of injuries this season, to take Smith's place on the roster.
While Smith could conceivably come back before the end of the regular season, hamstrings can always be tricky. The Giants will really miss what Smith brings to the table both offensively and defensively but one hopes his sacrifice will end up being worth it in the end.
Carson Whisenhunt nearing return
Left-handed pitcher Carson Whisenhunt has been dealing with a back injury but is supposed to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento soon. Starting pitching depth beyond Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, and Justin Verlander has been a big issue so any help they can get on that front would be appreciated even if Whisenhunt has struggled with the Giants this season.
Landen Roupp throws bullpen session
Another pitcher the Giants could potentially get back is Landen Roupp. It seemed like he was going to be shut down after he had a scary knee injury in San Diego that turned out to be not as bad as initially feared. Yet, he just threw a short bullpen session and could potentially come back by the end of the regular season depending on how he progresses. If not the regular season, maybe he could come back in the playoffs and be the team's fourth starter if they were to make it that far.
The Smith injury hurts quite a bit but at least the giants could potentially get some help with their rotation soon. They are trying to hold this thing together while still trying to make a push for the playoffs so we will see if they can land this plane in the final few weeks of the season.
