It has been mostly quiet on the injury front for the SF Giants this spring as they have avoided any major injuries early on. However, a few issues have popped up, headlined by Heliot Ramos battling oblique tightness according to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area.
SF Giants Injury News: Heliot Ramos, Erik Miller, and Tyler Fitzgerald
OF Heliot Ramos
Pavlovic notes that Ramos is expected to miss at least a week and the Giants are not concerned. It is so early in spring training that it just makes sense to be extra cautious with players. There is no need to push players around this time of year, especially position players.
If Ramos is able to return within a week, he should still have four weeks of game action in the Cactus League to get ready. In the meantime, it could open up some at-bats for Wade Meckler, Marco Luciano, and Luis Matos in left field.
The Giants will be counting on Ramos this year. The right-handed bat became the first Giants homegrown outfielder to make the All-Star team with the club since Chili Davis did so in 1986. Ramos was on a torrid pace in the first half and cooled off as the season progressed. Overall, he posted a .792 OPS with 22 home runs and 72 RBI in 518 plate appearances in 2024.
RP Erik Miller
This might be the most concerning injury for a couple of reasons. Pavlovic notes that Miller is behind schedule with finger numbness, which is concerning in and of itself.
The Giants are counting heavily on Miller this year and assuming a fair of risk by not going out and getting another reliable lefty for the bullpen. They did invite a handful of non-roster lefties, headlined by Joey Lucchesi. Antonio Jimenez has been a standout according to Bob Melvin so far. However, the Giants do not have any other left-handed relievers on the 40-man roster at the moment.
IF Tyler Fitzgerald
Tyler Fitzgerald has been slowed by a back ailment. He is expected to make his 2025 Cactus League debut this week. Casey Schmitt and Brett Wisely are among the players competing for the utility infielder role. This role should see a fair bit of time at second base behind Fitzgerald.
The young infielder is coming off of a surprisingly strong year, slashing .280/.334/.497 (132 wRC+) with 15 home runs and 34 RBI in 341 plate appearances. He also stole 17 bases in 21 opportunities last year.
