As is the case with every team each spring, the SF Giants are beginning to deal with some injuries. The latest news involves Rafael Devers, Harrison Bader, and Joel Peguero.
SF Giants injury news: Devers scratched, Bader's thumb, and Peguero's bullpen
Rafael Devers scratched from Friday's game
Devers was originally scheduled to be in Friday's lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, he was replaced by Bryce Eldridge at first base due to a tight left hamstring, per Justice delos Santos of The Mercury News.
The Giants won that game by a score of 12 - 4. Eldridge tallied one hit, including a double, in three at-bats to hand the Dodgers their first loss of the spring. Victor Bericoto led the way, as he launched a grand slam to extend the Giants' lead, and they did not look back.
On the other hand, the hamstring issue for Devers popped up while getting some work in at first base. The left-handed bat recorded an .851 OPS with 35 home runs and 109 RBI in 729 plate appearances split between the Boston Red Sox and Giants last season. He also appeared in 163 games.
Harrison Bader's thumb
Harrison Bader started in Friday's game against the Dodgers, but was replaced by Grant McCray after just one at-bat. According to delas Santos, Bader has been dealing with a thumb contusion for a few days. He is considered day-to-day.
The Giants added Bader on a two-year deal to help upgrade the defense. He is also coming off a strong season at the plate, posting a .796 OPS with 17 home runs and 54 RBI in 501 plate appearances. Bader will take over in center field, and Jung Hoo Lee will shift over to right field.
Joel Peguero's bullpen
On a more positive note, Joel Peguero threw a bullpen this week. He had been sidelined for the first couple of weeks due to a tight hamstring. The next step will be facing live hitters and then getting into game action. Relievers typically need a handful of appearances in the spring to be ready for the regular season.
Buster Posey conveyed that the Giants would have a relatively open competition in the bullpen. Nearly every role is up for grabs. Peguero flashed the premium velocity at the end of last year for a leverage role, even if he did not miss a lot of bats. Overall, he pitched to a 2.42 ERA with 17 strikeouts and eight walks in 22.1 frames for San Francisco in 2025.
