Just a month ago, there was a very real question about whether SF Giants manager Bob Melvin would be back as the skipper in 2026. That chatter has died down, but general manager Zack Minasian dodged the question in a recent interview.
Minasian talked with Bay Area sports reporter Tim Kawakami on his podcast and Kawakami asked him point blank if Melvin would return as manager in 2026. Here is what Minasian had to say:
“Yeah, I think with any staffing, especially with where we're at and how important these games are, it's just important to get through today, try and win today and just address any staffing, player moves, roster construction, all of those things that will be for 2026 at another time. And we're just trying to keep the focus as much on this team going out and competing each and every day as possible.”
SF Giants GM does not say whether Bob Melvin will be back
It was a non-answer but it is really not all that surprising. Minasian is not the one who ultimately makes that decision. That authority rests with president of baseball operations Buster Posey so Minasian would be overstepping his bounds by coming out and saying that Melvin is going to be back next year.
However, anyone who has watched the team play as of late has to imagine that Melvin will be back in 2026. For as terrible and lifeless as the team looked for much of the summer, they have come roaring back to at least give themselves a glimmer of hope at the playoffs which is remarkable considering how bad they looked not that long ago.
The fact that the team refused to quit and kept on fighting definitely does reflect well on Melvin. Plus, players on the team have been vocally supportive of him so it stands to reason that part of this hot streak may have been fueled by a desire to keep Melvin around.
Of course, one could argue that Melvin should still be held to account for not getting the most out of the roster over the summer which may very well ultimately cost them in the Wild Card race. But the fact that the team has shown life and, even if they miss the playoffs, is showing promise for 2026 does make things feel better than they did a month ago.
Minasian and the front office rightfully do not want to make any forceful endorsements of Melvin since last time they did it led to the team spiraling, but it seems pretty obvious Melvin is going to be back thanks to the recent play of the team.
