SF Giants' flurry of roster moves features 2 very questionable decisions

The SF Giants made a number of roster moves ahead of Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Reds at Oracle Park. Ten, in fact, for those keeping track at home. Two of them don’t make a ton a ton of sense.

Let’s break down every move made. Several of them are not a surprise after the injury issues the team dealt with on Sunday against the Boston Red Sox, but it’s very jarring just how much turnover there will be for tonight’s game.

Bryce Eldridge was placed on the bereavement list due to the passing of his grandfather. Willy Adames got put on the IL with a left elbow injury. Victor Bericoto was placed on the IL due to a knee injury. JT Brubaker was put on the IL due to a rib injury. Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson also got optioned to Triple-A Sacramento after a tough start on Sunday which doesn't make a ton of sense but we will get to that later.

Taking the place of those five players: infielder Nate Furman, outfielder Grant McCray, reliever Anthony Molina, reliever Ryan Walker, and infielder Shay Whitcomb. The Giants will trot out a lineup that is essentially filled with guys who belong in Triple-A. Rafael Devers and Jung Hoo Lee are the only two legitimate everyday players. Turner Hill will bat cleanup. My goodness.

Furman has been knocking on the door in Triple-A after getting sent down following a brief stint in the big leagues. McCray is running out of chances at the big league level so he needs to perform well. Molina was the pitcher acquired from the Atlanta Braves for Tyler Mahle at the trade deadline. Whitcomb was recently scooped up off waivers from the Houston Astros.

Giants are giving Ryan Walker yet another chance

And, of course, who could forget Ryan Walker. The man with a 7.52 ERA on the season in the big leagues. He’s actually done quite well in Triple-A, lowering his ERA in the minors from 3.48 to 1.73 since he was demoted.

Still, it is truly puzzling why the Giants would demote Wilkinson and call up Walker. Maybe they are just desperate for fresh arms and Tugboat will be back up with the Giants soon, but with fans already miffed at the team bringing Walker back yet again is sure to elicit groans. There's really no justification to not give Wilkinson more leash in this lost season so he needs to be back up soon.

At this point though, who cares? We’re all just watching games to hear Mike Krukow’s voice for the next month before his retirement so trot out whoever you want, it doesn’t really matter.
