The SF Giants are looking for more consistency in their offense. Some days they look like a competent big league lineup but others they look completely inept and it's a wonder how they ever score a run.
San Francisco has already swung a trade with the Cleveland Guardians this season in a deal that sent catcher Patrick Bailey to Cleveland in exchange for Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson and the No. 29 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, but maybe they can make another swap to land Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan.
The two-time All-Star has been struggling this season. Entering play on Tuesday he was hitting a paltry .200/.328/.255 with one home run and 10 runs batted in. He was just dropped from the leadoff spot in the order due to his struggles at the plate.
Kwan is a Bay Area native who was born in Los Gatos and raised in Fremont. Kwan has always seemed like he'd be a perfect guy for the Giants to target given his local roots and the fact that, when he is at his best, he is a high-contact hitter who plays great defense and uses his speed to his advantage.
The Giants already have two contact-first hitters in their lineup with Luis Arraez and Jung Hoo Lee. Arraez has been great this season, hitting .324/.365/.432 while Lee his hitting .268/.311/.385 on the year.
The Guardians probably want to be patient with Kwan but if they feel like they need some more offense or at least a different presence in their lineup then it could be the perfect time for the Giants to swoop in and snag him.
What would Giants have to give up to land Steven Kwan?
In a potential deal, the Giants would probably have to part ways with one of their starting outfielders whether it be Lee, Heliot Ramos, or Harrison Bader because the Guardians are in first place in the AL Central and still want to contend. Ramos offers the most upside offensively but he's a defensive liability and the Guardians prioritize strong defense. Bader is a strong defender but his lack of offense may turn off the Guardians even though he's shown signs of coming around.
San Francisco would probably also have to give up a prospect to get a deal done. Maybe they'd have to part ways with one of their young shortstop prospects like Luis Hernandez, Josuar Gonzalez, or Jhonny Level.
That may be too high of a price for San Francisco, but it's clear that whatever they have going right now in the outfield is not working so maybe Kwan would be more comfortable back home and would start hitting like he usually does.
It may be the perfect time for the Giants to get Kwan while he is struggling so if the front office likes him then they will have to act soon before he heats up.
