SF Giants fans were understandably miffed when Blake Snell opted out of his contract with the Giants and signed a large contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. If fans were hoping Giants ace Logan Webb would sound off on Snell, they were disappointed.
Appearing on The Chris Rose Rotation, Webb discussed a number of topics. He even made a pitch for top free agent starter Corbin Burnes to come to San Francisco. The full interview can be watched here.
Of course, the reason the Giants are even seriously connected to Burnes is because Snell is now a Dodger. Even though Snell was a Giant for just a year, there was still a feeling of betrayal amongst the fanbase. Matters were not helped by the fact that Snell did not make his last start of the season in what he called a "meaningless" game. For playoff purposes, it was. But there is still something to be said for competing no matter what the circumstances are.
SF Giants fans will not love Webb's response to Snell's defection
Giants fans are going to boo Snell for the rest of his career, but if fans are hoping Giants players will share that same distaste for Snell, they will be disappointed.
Rose asked Webb if he reached out to Snell after he signed his five-year $182 million deal with Los Angeles. Below is a snippet of Webb's response.
"I'm happy for Blake, man. Works his off, great teammate. I'm obviously not excited that he went there, but I don't know how you can turn down a $52 million signing bonus. I'm not mad at him for that," said Webb.
The conversation looped back to Snell when discussing New York Mets star Juan Soto and the reports that he has not talked to his New York Yankees teammates since. signing his $765 million deal.
"Blake's a friend that I'm gonna have for the rest of my life. When I see a guy like that...get paid what he deserves, I'm gonna be happy for him. I play for the Giants, I'm a fan of the Giants. Obviously I don't want him to be on the Dodgers. It's not like I'm just gonna not talk to him...And I'm sure Giants fans aren't gonna like hearing me say that."
This kind of response is to be expected from Webb. He is a very likeable guy so there is no way he would trash a former teammate for going to another team in free agency unless that player left on poor terms or was a jerk. By all indications, Snell was well-liked by his Giants teammates.
It is also a good reminder that fans often get more involved in rivalries than players do. For the most part, players are probably happy for one another when they land big contracts. Webb is right that his response may rub fans the wrong way, but it is his authentic reaction and true to himself.
Giants fans will let Snell hear it every time he takes the mound at Oracle Park as a Dodger, but do not expect Webb or any Giants players to give Webb the cold shoulder even if it would be satisfying for fans to see them to do so.
