SF Giants fans delight in Max Muncy's incredibly thin-skinned complaint
This one is pretty rich coming from this guy.
SF Giants fans can do nothing but watch as the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres square off in the NLDS. They can at least delight in Max Muncy's incredibly thin-skinned answer about the Padres.
This series between these two Southern Californian teams has gotten heated. There was already bad blood between the two franchises but it got elevated to a whole different level in Game 2 when Dodgers fans started throwing things at Padres outfielder Jurickson Profar after he robbed a home run and there has been endless discourse about Manny Machado throwing a baseball a little too close to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
SF Giants nemesis is incredibly thin-skinned
A lot of the discourse has become overblown, but it is clear that the antics of the Padres is getting in the head of some Dodgers players like Max Muncy. In a recent press conference Muncy complained about the mind games that Padres players play like supposedly flipping a bat 30 feet into the air whenever they get a single.
Giants fans will roll their eyes and laugh at this coming from Muncy. He has never been afraid to gloat and grandstand when he has hit home runs and had success against the Giants over the years. I guess he can dish out the gloating but just cannot take it.
Also keep in mind that he plays for a team that employed an, in the infinitely wise words of Giants broadcaster Dave Flemming, idiotic dance whenever they got doubles this season.
Perhaps it is this aggrieved mindset from Muncy that explains why the Dodgers have had so many struggles in the postseason the past decade. If they are more focused about the antics of the other team and let them get under their skin so easily, it is no wonder why they have been perennial chokers.
With all of the emphasis on celebrations and retaliations and all of the immaturity that has been on display from both sides in this series, it makes one appreciate how the Giants went about their business in all three championship runs last decade. There was no drama, no showmanship, no selfishness, and no flashiness. It was all about staying steady and winning games.
That came from the top with manager Bruce Bochy but it also came from their leaders like Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford, Hunter Pence, and Madison Bumgarner. It was all about the team over the individual and that is a huge reason why they won 3 titles in 5 years.
If Fernando Tatis Jr. or Muncy had hit the grand slam Posey hit in the 2012 NLDS, they might still be celebrating right now and would have returned to the dugout to be given a torch to light the Reds mascot on fire. Instead, Posey admired it for half a second before putting his head down and running the bases. That's the way you do it.
We will see if the thin-skinned approach being employed by Muncy and the Dodgers bears fruit, but if you are clearly irked by the other team's celebrations it is pretty clear that your head is not in the place it needs to be to win a championship.
