SF Giants fans are all too familiar with Tommy Pham’s antics after social media spat with Reds outfielder

Tommy Pham is a unique MLB player. He’s played for so many teams and has made news for all the wrong reasons over the years yet he’s still been a solid enough player to at least be semi-relevant into his late 30s.

His latest incident involves him picking a fight with Cincinnati Reds outfielder Dane Myers on social media over defensive metrics. Pham essentially claimed that Myers was trying to claim a ball that wasn’t his in the outfield so he could pad his defensive stats and help himself get a better contract.

It was a weird thing to allege especially since Pham is currently in Triple-A with the Philadelphia Phillies organization. One would think he’d be more preoccupied with trying to get back to the big leagues.

Yet, for anyone who has followed Pham over the years this does not come as any sort of surprise. Giants fans will never forget the “slap heard round the world” when Pham slapped then-Giants outfield Joc Pederson back in 2022 over a fantasy football dispute.

This came just months after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars so perhaps that’s where Pham drew his inspiration from. It was a bizarre incident and Joc Pederson’s remarks afterwards were just as memorable. He deadpan describes what went down in their fantasy football chat and even shared a GIF he posted making fun of the San Diego Padres which apparently set Pham off.

What a world we live in.

Pham was suspended for that incident and he’s also been suspended for making a lewd gesture at a fan. He got stabbed outside a strip club back in 2020 during the pandemic and he got into a dustup with former Giant Tyler Heineman last year. 

In short, he’s got a pretty poor reputation and it clearly does not take much to set him off. It is a wonder that he’s lasted this long in the big leagues. One would think he’s burned a lot of bridges but he keeps on getting chances. This season in the big leagues Pham went hitless in a brief stint with the New York Mets.

We will have to see if he makes it back to the big leagues or if he just languishes in the minors for the rest of his career but one can only imagine he will find a way to stay in the headlines since that’s what he seems to do best.
