On Thursday, the Richmond Flying Squirrels and Altoona Curve began the 11th inning tied at six runs apiece. However, the SF Giants Double-A affiliate secured a convincing victory by scoring 12 runs in the top half of that inning to net an 18-6 win.
SF Giants Double-A affiliate puts up 12-run inning in win over Altoona Curve
The extra-inning rules are the same in the minors as they are in the majors. Each team begins the inning with a runner at second base.
That free runner has led to some bizarre finishes throughout baseball. Almost a year ago to the day, the Giants put up nine runs in extra innings to notch a 14-5 win over the Chicago Cubs.
That is what happened with Richmond on Thursday night. Jonah Cox started the inning at second base and stole third base, marking his 15th steal of the year. There were a few misplays in the field, and before Altoona knew it, they were down by three runs.
The offensive outburst was not led by a barrage of home runs. Rather, it was by keeping the line moving with walks and singles. Bo Davidson had the big swing of the bat in that inning, launching a three-run home run to right field.
The left-handed bat has not found a groove yet at the plate, but he has hit with some power. He has five home runs in 69 plate appearances so far.
Davidson was one of four Flying Squirrels to record a multi-hit game. The others were Scott Bandura, Sabin Ceballos, and Diego Velasquez.
Richmond's lineup has been the best in the Eastern League, as it has averaged 7.86 runs per game. They are getting quality at-bats up and down the lineup.
It would be hard to single out just one player. So many are off to strong starts. Drew Cavanaugh, Scott Bandura, and Jonah Cox have anchored the lineup. In fact. Cox's .397 batting average leads all qualified minor leaguers at the moment.
Sabin Ceballos has posted a .979 OPS with five home runs and 16 RBI in 90 plate appearances during his second turn in the Eastern League. He got off to a slow start last year, but he been on a tear since the middle of last season.
Richmond also got a boost to the lineup with Parks Harber coming off the injured list. He made a favorable impression on the coaching staff in the spring before sustaining a hamstring strain. Harber has an .865 OPS through 26 plate appearances.
Richmond's lineup has arguably been the biggest surprise in the Giants organization in 2026. The 12-run 11th inning is yet another example of their prowess. That is one shy of the Giants' franchise record for an inning. They scored 13 runs in an inning twice before. The last time came on July 15, 1997, against the San Diego Padres in a 16-2 victory. That was my first year watching Giants baseball, and I just assumed they did that all the time.
