SF Giants division rival news: Padres ousted, Diamondbacks update, and Rockies change

San Diego Padres ousted

The San Diego Padres lost to the Chicago Cubs in the Wild Card round. Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. combined for two hits in 22 at-bats during the series.

The Padres have scaled back on payroll in recent seasons, but have continued to find ways to win. According to Cot's, they committed $270.9 million against the Competitive Balance Tax (CBT), which is well above the CBT threshold of $241 million.

They still have a core of players in place, consisting of Machado, Tatis Jr., and Jackson Merrill. That said, this team could look a bit different next season. Dylan Cease and Ryan O'Hearn are slated to hit free agency. Michael King, Robert Suárez, Ramón Laureano, and Elías Díaz all have options for 2026. It will be another interesting offseason for San Diego.

Arizona Diamondbacks sticking with manager

The Arizona Diamondbacks confirmed that Torey Lovullo will be returning for his 10th season next year. However, Lovullo is entering a lame-duck season, as contract expires after 2026. Teams usually like to avoid that with managers and front office executives, so that will be an interesting story to follow.

The Diamonbacks finished in fourth place in the NL West, with an 80-82 record. The Giants sat just ahead of them in the division, with 81 wins. Lovullo led Arizona to an improbable World Series run in 2023, but lost to the Texas Rangers in five games.

Colorado Rockies searching for a new general manager

The Colorado Rockies will be searching for a new general manager after Bill Schmidt stepped down. Schmidt had held that post since 2021, but has been working in the Rockies' front office since 1999.

The Rockies have had some rough seasons lately, including a 119-loss season in 2025. They have put together seven straight losing seasons. The last time they finished with a winning record was in 2018, when they won 91 games but lost to the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS. The Rockies will look externally to fill the general manager opening.
