The SF Giants can likely cross one managerial candidate off their list. According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Skip Schumaker has been hired by the Texas Rangers to be their next manager.

Grant adds that the Rangers did not consider any external candidates, so Schumaker was always viewed as the frontrunner.

That is not surprising news. For the past season, Schumaker had been working in the Rangers' front office as an advisor to general manager Chris Young.

As soon as the Rangers mutually agreed to part ways with Bruce Bochy, it seemed like Schumaker would transition from the front office to the dugout.

On the other hand, it also seemed like Bochy was going to reunite with San Francisco. He had expressed his willingness to have a conversation with Buster Posey. However, Posey quickly put that idea to a rest.

Bochy had been with the Rangers for three seasons. This included a memorable 2023 season where they won their first World Series title in franchise history. The Rangers finished with 81 wins this season, and Chris Young conveyed to Bochy that they could look to scale back payroll. That proved to be enough for both parties to go their separate ways. The Rangers did leave the door open for Bochy to return for a role in the front office.

Skip Schumaker was widely considered the most popular name in this year's hiring cycle. Other teams reached out for interviews, but those conversations did not gain any traction.

The former big league infielder had a two-year run with the Miami Marlins that ended after the 2024 season. This included leading the Marlins to a surprise playoff run in 2023, but then losing to the Philadelphia Phillies in two games during the Wild Card round. Schumaker was selected as the NL Manager of the Year that season.

Schumaker was reportedly upset with then-general manager Kim Ng being ousted, and had his contract restructured to remove a club option for 2025. He stepped down in the final weekend of the 2024 season, and was eventually replaced by Clayton McCullough.

The Giants have begun their search for a new manager. Schumaker had been mentioned as an option by multiple sources, but they will now need to look elsewhere.
