The SF Giants enter the offseason with pitching as their primary focus, but second base is also a position they could upgrade at. Maybe Tampa Bay Rays All-Star second baseman Brandon Lowe would make sense.
Grant Brisbee of The Athletic identified Lowe as a potential trade target for the team, writing: "There is a trade fit that makes a ton of sense, though: Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe. The left-handed slugger has the kind of batted-ball metrics that would give him a chance at Oracle Park, and he’d give the Giants 30-homer potential at second base. He’ll make $11.5 million next season, and while the Rays’ new owners might not be as spending-averse as the outgoing ownership group, his salary and pending free agency make him a natural trade target."
SF Giants could swing a trade for Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe
Lowe would be an interesting target for the Giants. Last season in Tampa Bay he slashed .256/.307/.477 with 31 home runs and 88 runs batted in across 134 games. He earned an All-Star nod, the second of his career, so the Giants may have to cough up something decent for him.
Perhaps they would have to give up Casey Schmitt, the team's second baseman for much of 2025, along with a mid-level prospect or another player who piques the interest of Tampa Bay to get them interested.
It would be interesting to see how Lowe's offense would translate to San Francisco. Power is a big part of his game but we know that left-handed hitters can get eaten alive at Oracle Park and the Giants may have more of a desire for hitters who can put the ball in play and hit line drives rather than guys who hit the ball out of the park.
There is also the question of whether the Giants really need to upgrade at second base. There are other far more pressing areas to address and Casey Schmitt did a lot of good things as the team's second baseman in 2025.
Schmitt slashed .237/.305/.401 with 12 homers and 40 runs batted in while providing solid defense at second base. It remains to be seen whether he could repeat that, but if he can the Giants would probably be happy with that.
Still, for a team that has been in the .500 doldrums for four straight seasons they have to look for any way they can improve. There are potential free agent upgrades available as well, with Bo Bichette representing a potential high-end upgrade while someone like Ha-Seong Kim would be a more modest upgrade.
Lowe is an interesting name to keep an eye on though if the Giants do decide that second base is a spot they would like to improve at in 2026.
