The SF Giants have been in a bad funk as of late that forced them to sell at the trade deadline. However, last night's win against the New York Mets could give them hope that they could replicate the success of the 2024 Detroit Tigers the rest of this season.
Last season, Detroit found themselves five games below .500 at the end of July. They seemed out of the playoff hunt and were selling off pieces including Mark Canha who they traded to the Giants.
SF Giants could follow the path of the 2024 Detroit Tigers
Detroit's struggles carried over into August and they were eight games below .500 on August 11 before going on an absolute tear to end the season. They went 31-11 in their final 42 games to clinch a playoff spot and beat the Houston Astros in the Wild Card series before falling to the Cleveland Guardians in five games during the ALDS.
It was an epic run that has carried over into this season and it should give the Giants hope that maybe they can do something similar this season.
They are in a better spot than Detroit was last year as the Giants are now .500 after yesterday's win against the Mets. The Giants are currently six games back of the San Diego Padres for the third NL Wild Card spot.
San Diego went all out at the trade deadline, adding a number of solid players. They are going to be a tough team to track down, but the Giants do play them seven times the rest of the season so they could make up some ground in those head-to-head contests.
While the Giants sold off two key bullpen arms and a solid outfield piece in Mike Yastrzemski, they still have hope. Randy Rodríguez is an All-Star who could flourish replacing Camilo Doval as the closer. Ryan Walker is one year removed from being an elite bullpen arm and could recapture his form as an eighth inning guy.
Maybe Luis Matos can get hot with the bat as he finally figures to get consistent playing time after being an infrequent starter and bench piece for much of the season.
Plus, we have not seen Rafael Devers get really hot for an extended period of time so maybe if he can finally find his form that could be the key difference.
The odds are against the Giants, but if history has shown us anything it is that adversity often brings out the best in them. It will be a tall order for them to make the playoffs, but they can look to last year's Detroit Tigers for some inspiration.
