We only get a little over a month with Mike Krukow as a primary broadcaster with the SF Giants. It really hasn’t sunk in yet and probably won’t fully until next year when we haven’t heard his voice calling a game for a while, but Krukow got snubbed one more time before he retires.

Awful Announcing releases its ranking of local MLB broadcasters every year. The Giants got snubbed last year as they got the No. 3 ranking and they got snubbed yet again this year as they got the No. 2 ranking and came in second to the San Diego Padres broadcast team.

Of all the years for the Giants to get first place, this should have been the year. The voters for this poll are Awful Announcing readers so apparently there’s an anti-Giants bias or ignorance amongst that crop of readers.

It’s a shame even though it’s a fairly pointless distinction to earn the No. 1 spot on the list. Why not send Krukow out on top? Giants fans know he’s the best color commentator in the game so to put anyone ahead of him really just feels silly any year but especially during his swan song.

Maybe readers just aren’t familiar with Krukow’s work or maybe the Los Angeles Dodgers used one of their life insurance companies to send some cash to a click farm to sway the vote against the Giants. Too soon?

Mike Krukow (and Duane Kuiper) deserve recognition from Hall of Fame

Perhaps the bigger question is whether Krukow, his broadcast partner Duane Kuiper, or Jon Miller will earn the Ford C. Frick Award someday. Kruk and Kuip obviously deserve to go in together but the current National Baseball Hall of Fame rules do not permit that.

If Krukow’s retirement can at least force the Hall of Fame to change its ways for once that would be good, but obviously his retirement is a great loss for Giants fans. He has an ability to make games fun even if they’re blowouts and his charm, wit, and baseball IQ will be sorely missed in the broadcast booth.

One hopes he will still call the occasional game for the Giants in the future or fill in if his healthy permits, but we just have to cherish every game he calls the rest of the season because he is the best there is, no matter what Awful Announcing says.
