This would be quite a turn of events.

The SF Giants could be in the market for a shortstop this offseason. With news coming out that the owners of the Minnesota Twins plan to sell the team, could it be possible for the Giants to swing a trade for star shortstop Carlos Correa?

SF Giants beat writer Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic floated this potential trade on the social media platform X. He notes that teams that are going to be sold will often try to offload some of their larger contracts which could mean that the Twins may be looking to move Correa.

SF Giants could swing a crazy trade for Carlos Correa

Of course, Baggarly's suggestion is at least a little tongue in cheek because it seems very unlikely that it will happen. But there is no doubt that it would be the irony of all ironies if Correa ultimately ended up on the Giants after all of the drama surrounding his contract with the Giants that fell through during the 2022 offseason.

For those who forget, Correa and the Giants agreed to a 13-year, $350 million contract back in December of 2022 before the deal fell through because of concerns about his ankle that were raised during his physical.

A similar thing happened with the New York Mets who also agreed to a large deal with him before backing out over concerns with the ankle. Ultimately, Correa ended up back with the Minnesota Twins on a 6-year, $200 million contract.

2023 was a rough season for Correa as he hit .230/.312/.399 with 18 home runs and 65 RBI in 135 games. 2024 was much better as he hit .310/.388/.517 with 14 home runs and 54 RBI but he had trouble staying on the field, only appearing in 86 games.

It is possible that Correa could be traded if the Twins do indeed try to shed some payroll. But if the Giants had enough concern to shred the deal with Correa in 2022, it would not make a ton of sense for them to trade for him and inherit his long-term deal now. The injury issues in 2024 definitely raise some eyebrows about how reliable he will be going forward.

The Giants would probably be better served going after either Willy Adames or Ha-Seong Kim in free agency to address their need at shortstop this offseason.

Still, Baggarly's ironic trade proposal would be pretty remarkable considering all of the drama that occurred between the Giants and Correa just two years ago.
