SF Giants announcer says there is no chance team lands premier free agent

It is hard to argue with his blunt assessment.

There are some premier free agents still out there in the market, and it is conceivable that one of them could fall into the lap of the SF Giants, but Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper said there is no chance the team will land infielder Alex Bregman.

In an appearance on KNBR, Kuiper did not even entertain the possibility that Bregman would join the Giants, bluntly saying, “It’s not gonna happen.” The full clip can be viewed here

SF Giants announcer Duane Kuiper says there is no way team gets Alex Bregman

Kuiper spoke about the difficulty of getting a player to move positions as well. Bregman is a third baseman, but the Giants already have a third baseman in Matt Chapman. They cannot move Bregman to shortstop since the team already signed Willy Adames to the largest contract in franchise history to be their everyday shortstop.

The most logical solution if Bregman came to San Francisco would be to move Bregman to second base. It may be a bit of a weird transition initially, but he seems like he is good enough of an athlete that he would be serviceable at second. Bregman slashed .260/.315/.453 with the Houston Astros last season with 26 home runs and 75 RBI so he would definitely provide a jolt to the lineup.

Of course, this would force Tyler Fitzgerald into more of a utility role after his breakout 2024 season. He has proven he can play all over the diamond, but it is worth wondering if moving around a lot will have a negative impact on his offense.

However, all of this is moot if Kuiper is right that there is no way the Giants will sign Bregman. On a gut level, it feels like Kuip is right in his analysis. President of baseball operations Buster Posey has made it sound like he feels comfortable with where the roster is at right now. There are more natural fits for Bregman like with the Chicago Cubs who have reportedly made him a pretty strong offer

Maybe if all of his other options fall through the Giants could swoop in and snag Bregman, but that does not seem very likely.

We know the Giants want to cut payroll this offseason and signing Bregman could bring the team closest to crossing the luxury tax which is something they are clearly trying to avoid. They seem content to let Tyler Fitzgerald take the second base job to start 2025 and see if he can run with it.

Kuip may be blunt, but it is hard to argue with his assessment that Bregman is not very likely to join the Giants.
