These free agents could end up falling into the lap of the SF Giants

These players have to sign with a team eventually. Why not the SF Giants?

SF Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey recently said he thinks the team feels pretty set with where the roster is at right now. However, with several big name free agents still out there, maybe a player could fall into San Francisco's lap.

It seems unlikely that the Giants will make another big addition this offseason. As of right now, they seem to be content with their additions of Willy Adames at shortstop and Justin Verlander to the rotation. Yet, the team would definitely benefit from another big bat in the lineup or another arm in the rotation, though.

Last offseason the Giants signed both third baseman Matt Chapman and left-handed pitcher Blake Snell to short term deals in spring training so they have a history of making deals late in the process. Let's take a look at some big names who remain unsigned and could end up signing with San Francisco.

Free agents who could fall into the lap of the SF Giants

Pete Alonso

Probably the best bat available in free agency is first baseman Pete Alonso. The right-handed slugger established himself as one of the premier power bats in baseball with the New York Mets, but there is some reporting that suggests a reunion with New York is unlikely.

The Giants have continued to be connected to him, though. While a one year deal in a pitcher-friendly home park would be unlikely, the Giants would certainly benefit from his thump in the middle of the order.

Alex Bregman

Another star player who has remained unsigned is infielder Alex Bregman. He has had a great career with the Houston Astros but, like Alonso, it is seeming increasingly unlikely that he will return to the team he has spent his entire career with.

A fit with the Giants would be imperfect since he is a third baseman and the Giants are already set there with Chapman. Bregman would probably have to play second base for the team which would be an adjustment but having his bat in the lineup would be huge for San Francisco as he has hit more than 20 home runs each of the past three seasons.

Jack Flaherty

The best available starting pitcher in free agency is Jack Flaherty. The right-hander had a solid season with the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024, posting a 3.17 ERA on the year.

The Giants seem fairly set with their rotation after signing Verlander, but given the fact that he is going to be 42 years old soon and the fact that Robbie Ray has a lengthy injury history, it may not be the worst idea to have an extra starter.

This may force the team to take Jordan Hicks or Kyle Harrison out of the starting rotation initially, or they could opt to have a six-man rotation. We know a team can never have too much starting pitching.

The Giants signing any of these players does not seem highly likely, but the longer these players remain available in free agency, the greater the chance that the Giants can swoop in and snag them on a one year deal.
