The SF Giants are facing off against the A's this weekend, and are slated to see two left-handed starts. In advance of that, they activated Tyler Fitzgerald from the injured list. In a corresponding roster move, Brett Wisely was optioned to Triple-A, per the team's transaction log.
SF Giants activate speedy infielder from the injured list, option Brett Wisely
The Giants have struggled against left-handed pitching this season. It is a minor surprise given that they have a right-handed-heavy lineup. That said, it does not hurt to continue stacking the lineup with righties in those matchups.
Fitzgerald returns after only missing 13 games with a rib fracture. He began a rehab assignment with the Sacramento River Cats, collecting three hits in 10 at-bats across three games.
Christian Koss saw the majority of the at-bats at second base in Fitzgerald's absence. He added a huge notch to his belt as he blasted a grand slam as his first major league home run. Ford Proctor was the last Giants hitter to achieve that feat in 2022.
Nevertheless, Koss has a .595 OPS through 64 plate appearances this season. He does have a knack for clutch hitting, registering eight hits in 15 at-bats with runners in scoring position.
The Giants lineup could use some help. The last three or four hitters have struggled badly, so having Fitzgerald will go a long way in helping the offense.
The right-handed bat has recorded a .284/.341/.432 line (119 wRC+) with two home runs, seven RBI, and 14 runs in 90 plate appearances this season. Plus, he has swiped five bases in six opportunities. The Giants' running game nearly disappeared in his absence, as they stole four bases in seven chances.
Much of Fitzgerald's offensive production came during a four-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies. He added eight hits, including two home runs, with five RBI in 17 at-bats during that series. The Giants will be happy to have him back in the lineup.
Brett Wisely was optioned to make room on the active roster. He put together 10 hitless at-bats while Fitzgerald was on the injured list. With a new front office this season, it does feel like Wisely has fallen out of favor.
