SF Giants ace Logan Webb is back with the team after he was away for a bit with Team USA competing in the World Baseball Classic. Team USA came up short by losing in the final to Team Venezuela and Webb does not appreciate those questioning how much Team USA cared about the competition.

Speaking to Giants reporters, Webb said the following: “I feel like there's a narrative that we didn't care. That's complete [expletive]. I think we probably cared the most out of every team, to be honest with you. We do things in different ways than some of the other teams, but we care a lot."

Logan Webb claps back at those who say Team USA didn’t care

Certainly, some commentators took issue with some players on Team USA not making themselves fully available. Tarik Skubal’s decision to only pitch in one game certainly drew a lot of scrutiny. But it definitely seems like the team was motivated to win. Obviously, they had to balance that motivation with also not wanting to get guys hurt ahead of the regular season, but Webb certainly looked like a guy who was trying to win.

Webb made two starts and both were phenomenal. In those two starts, Webb pitched 8 and 2/3 innings and only allowed one earned run which ironically came on a home run to the first batter he faced in the first game against Team Brazil. One could argue he was easily Team USA’s MVP and he showed on a national stage what he is capable of.

He also took issue with the members of Team Venezuela on the Giants, Luis Arraez and José Buttó, talking some smack in camp. The competitor in Webb is clearly still stung by the loss but maybe it will serve as motivation for the upcoming season.

Webb hasn’t been to the MLB playoffs since 2021. That season he established himself as San Francisco’s ace and pitched really well in Game 1 and Game 5 of the NLDS versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. Webb has continued to do his part for the team ever since that season, but mediocrity has ensued.

Maybe this season, with some solid additions like Arraez and Bader and a new coaching staff led by Tony Vitello, will prove different for San Francisco. There was really no choice but to try and shake things up since clearly whatever they have done since 2021 has not worked as well as possible.

Webb is clearly sick and tired of the team not making the playoffs and one can’t help but feel he is being wasted a little bit. The Giants have to get him back to the playoffs so he can show off his stuff on a grand stage just like he did in the World Baseball Classic.
