The SF Giants got in an altercation on Tuesday night when slugger Rafael Devers smashed a home run off Colorado Rockies starter Kyle Freeland. Giants ace Logan Webb did not hold back when asked about Freeland.
Webb was asked about the incident and specifically Freeland’s reaction to Devers admiring the home run in the first inning and Webb had the following to say:
"Surprised it hasn't happened before with that guy. Just kind of runs his mouth ..."

It’s clear Freeland is someone other players have had an eye on for a while as a guy who would do something like this. As our own Jeff Young noted on social media, in a different era a guy pimping a home run like that in the first inning would inevitably lead to a fastball up and in the next time around but in today’s era, for better or worse, that sort of reaction is commonplace.
As for Freeland, this is what he had to say:
Freeland: “It was the pure disrespect of a first inning, home run – standing there watching it. It felt like it took 15 seconds for him to get to first base."

Freeland said he figured Chapman and Adames were ejected for shoving him and that Devers later shoved him, too.
“It was the pure disrespect of a first inning, home run – standing there watching it. It felt like it took 15 seconds for him to get to first base."
It is understandable that a pitcher might feel a little disrespected after getting shown up like that. It is also more than fair to argue that if you don’t want to get shown up then maybe you should just get the batter out.
Giants fans for years saw Madison Bumgarner take exception when he felt players disrespected him. Some pitchers simply go out on the mound with a chip on their shoulder with something to prove and it seems Freeland is one of those guys.
Nonetheless, even though the arguing and ensuing mini-brawl led to Freeland getting ejected along with Matt Chapman and Willy Adames the Giants still went on to win the game 7-4.
This is the sort of gut-check game the Giants had to win at this point in the season. They are absolutely rolling right now and had all the momentum in the world before the altercation. It would have been easy for things to get derailed but perhaps the fact that Chapman and Adames were showing they had Devers’ back is what inspired the team to come together and get the job done without two of their best players against a lowly Rockies club.
Even if the Giants end up not making the playoffs this season, this is one of those sorts of wins that can bring a club closer together moving forward so it could have ramifications beyond the 2025 season.
