The SF Giants gave the ball to 42-year-old veteran and future member of the Hall of Fame Justin Verlander on Friday for their home opener. He did not have his best outing and, to make matters worse, he was accidentally trolled to his face before the game.
In the pregame lead up to the game against the Seattle Mariners, the Giants played a pretty awesome 4-minute video recounting some of the best moments in Oracle Park's history to celebrate the fact that the park is now 25 years old.
Of course, one of the most memorable moments in Oracle Park's history came back in Game 1 of the 2012 World Series when Pablo Sandoval, who, like Verlander, is still playing professional baseball, hit three home runs, two of them off the mighty Verlander.
SF Giants accidentally troll Justin Verlander before home opener
The Giants included Sandoval's epic performance as part of the video but they do not linger on it too long. Verlander is visible for Sandoval's first homer, but they used an angle without Verlander in it for the second one. Mercifully, they also did not include Verlander saying, "Wow," after the second one left the yard.
Not only that, but even if Verlander was not looking at the videoboard as the video played from one of the lower moments in his legendary career, Giants broadcaster Jon Miller was the one announcing the starting lineup and pitcher for the Giants and when introducing Verlander he said, just in case Verlander had forgotten, that it was the veteran's first time pitching at Oracle Park in 13 years. That's right, the last time Verlander was on the mound in that ballpark is when he gave up five earned runs in four innings of work in that World Series game.
Perhaps that was not the best thing to remind him of before he took the mound for his first start at home as a member of the Giants.
Unfortunately, his second time pitching at Oracle Park was also not too spectacular. He gave up three earned runs and did not make it out of the third inning.
However, it did not matter in the end as the Giants went on to win the game in walk-off fashion in the 11th inning.
Perhaps it was good to get Verlander's first start back at Oracle Park out of the way just so he can get over the demons he experienced there back in 2012.
The accidental trolljob probably did not play a role in Verlander's struggles, but it is still kind of funny that the Giants celebrated the 25th anniversary of Oracle Park and included Sandoval's dominant performance against Verlander as part of the celebration.
