SF Giants third baseman Matt Chapman has had a bit of a rough year so far. His offensive numbers are down from where they usually are and he has surprisingly not put up the power stats that we’ve grown accustomed to.
Not only that, but he may have had the worst strikeout of any MLB hitter during the season. Chapman talked about a rough at-bat he had earlier in the season against the San Diego Padres.
“Some fan told me I was going to strike out and then called every single pitch that was coming from behind home plate, and he was right, and I struck out.”
Matt Chapman got struck out in the most humiliating fashion
That’s a rough at-bat and you know it’s a bad one because Chapman was still thinking about it weeks later. Unfortunately for him, there is video evidence of the at-bat that can be viewed below.

The at-bat came against Padres closer Mason Miller who has been one of the most unhittable pitchers in baseball this season. That just shows how good Miller is, someone could literally tell a hitter what was coming and he still couldn’t do anything with it.
At least Chapman was able to laugh about it a bit, but he’s probably not laughing too much about his struggles so far this season. He’s a leader on the team and he still provides a ton of value with his defense at third base but he has to hope the bat will come around at some point.
The Giants gave him a big contract extension at the end of the 2024 season and he will be under contract until 2030. That’s a long time to be committed to a player, especially a guy who is 33 years old. Typically a player doesn’t get more productive in his mid thirties so there’s definitely a chance the Giants will come to regret paying him $25 million per year especially since he has a no-trade clause in his contract.
Maybe it will just take some time for him to get turned around. Rafael Devers got off to a rough start in April but has looked much better in May so perhaps Chapman will get it rolling soon enough.
He will probably face Miller again at some point this season so let’s hope he can redeem himself especially if that same fan tells him what’s coming again.
