It’s the All-Star Break and that means that trade chatter is only going to heat up between now and the August 3 trade deadline. The SF Giants have a number of trade chips and they have plenty of decisions to make in the coming weeks.
There’s been some scuttlebutt around the team in Philadelphia during All-Star Game festivities and some of it has involved third baseman Matt Chapman.
The Giants have made it clear they are open to trading away their players with big contracts, but it seems exceedingly unlikely that will happen. Third baseman Matt Chapman has underperformed this season and is currently on the IL with an abdominal injury which makes it seem unlikely he’ll be traded especially since he will be owed $100 million over the next four seasons.
His agent Scott Boras seemed to confirm that his client is unlikely to be traded. Per John Shea of the San Francisco Standard, Boras said the following when asked about the possibility that Chapman could be dealt, “I would say that it’s not something on the radar.”
Chapman holds a lot of power in any trade talks
A team would have to be pretty desperate for a third baseman to trade for him and even if they were, the Giants probably aren’t keen on eating a good portion of Chapman’s contract in order to make a deal happen. Plus, Chapman has a no-trade clause so he can dictate where he goes or whether he goes at all.
Before his IL stint, Chapman was hitting .235/.324/.368 with seven home runs and 42 runs batted in. He has still been solid defensively but the drop-off at the plate is hard to stomach when he is expected to be one of the driving forces for the team’s offense.
The emergence of Casey Schmitt gives the Giants a reason to trade Chapman since they’d likely need to clear a spot in the infield for him. Schmitt has proven he’s no slouch defensively at third base and he is on pace to hit over 30 home runs this season so the 27-year-old clearly has more upside going forward than the 33-year-old Chapman.
Still, Chapman is just going to be so hard to move. There probably aren’t many teams who want him plus he’s injured so it makes a trade feel unlikely. Boras usually talks out of both sides of his mouth but he’s probably telling the truth on this one.
