Ryan Walker and 5 other SF Giants who are next on the 40-man roster chopping block

The SF Giants have a 40-man roster crunch looming in the offseason with all of the players they currently have on the 60-day IL. It is not going to be an easy task for the front office to make all of the math work especially if they plan on signing some new players, hopefully some relievers.

The team just designated Philip Abner for assignment which is not a big shock given his recent struggles and it comes shortly after the Giants DFA'd Spencer Bivens. This is just the beginning, though. While one hopes there are no more players DFA'd in this final week because that would mean everyone on the roster stayed healthy, the offseason will feature a lot more players being put on waivers. Let's dive into the most obvious players who will be let go.

Ryan Walker

The Giants have given Ryan Walker many chances to regain his 2024 form which made him one of the most effective relievers in MLB, but it is clear that if he does get back on track it will not happen with San Francisco. Many fans will rejoice when he is inevitably DFA'd which is a shame but he has really struggled this season to the tune of a 7.16 ERA so it is time to move on.

Tristan Beck

While Tristan Beck deserves a lot of credit for coming into Monday's game after Blade Tidwell got hurt and delivering 2 and 2/3 scoreless innings, there just likely won't be a place for him in the bullpen next year especially with his 5.94 ERA. He is probably best suited as a bulk-innings reliever but the Giants already have that in Matt Wilkinson and others.

Beck is now 30 so the Giants would be wise to move on even though he has shown promise at times with San Francisco.

Brett Harris

The Giants have had so many injuries in the infield that Brett Harris is the definition of a placeholder. He's hitting .240/.296/.320 with the Giants which isn't terrible, but they are not going to have him as a bench option next season with Christian Koss and Marcelo Mayer seeming like the most logical backup infielders, so he will continue his waiver carousel after San Francisco scooped him up from the Boston Red Sox.

Osleivis Basabe

While Basabe had a hot start after getting called up this season, he too is simply a placeholder with all the injured infielders. He is hitting .205/.266/.346 with five homers and 13 runs batted in but he will have to find another home.

Shay Whitcomb

Unfortunately, Shay Whitcomb falls into the same category. He's shown promise with the Giants but is hitting just .188/.207/.300. There is just not going to be room for him on the roster either.

These are just the easy moves. The harder ones will be when the Giants have to decide whether to keep guys like Joel Peguero or Matt Gage who are on the IL currently.

One doesn't envy the position that Buster Posey is in for a number of reasons, but at least these six players are pretty easy decisions to make when it comes to sorting through the 40-man roster mess.
