3 SF Giants relievers who will be next out the door after Spencer Bivens DFA

The SF Giants made a roster move on Wednesday by claiming right-handed pitcher Duncan Davitt off waivers from the Atlanta Braves. They designated Spencer Bivens for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

It’s sad to see Bivens go since he was a solid reliever for the team the last two seasons but this year things just haven’t worked out. His story to get to the big leagues is pretty remarkable and his five-inning start against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024 when the Giants simply needed someone to give them innings was really special. 

He struck out Shohei Ohtani to end that outing and qualify for the win and celebrated like a guy who waited a long time to make it to the big leagues. One can only hope he goes to a good home or there’s the chance he might clear waivers and choose to stay with the Giants.

Either way, Bivens is probably not going to be the only reliever we’ve grown accustomed to seeing the last few years get DFA’d. With a roster crunch looming in the offseason thanks to all the guys currently on the 60-man roster, there’s going to be a lot of churn and these three relievers will probably not make the cut.

3 relievers who are also likely to get DFA’d after Spencer Bivens 

Ryan Walker

He’s been given a lot of chances, but it seems pretty likely that Ryan Walker’s time with the Giants is over. He was truly dominant in 2024 and looked like he could be a legitimate closer for San Francisco, but 2025 was a struggle and 2026 has been pretty disastrous for him.

Walker has a 7.16 ERA on the year and was just demoted in favor of recently claimed reliever Joel Kuhnel. Maybe Walker can find his form with another organization but it’s time for the Giants to move on and give other options a try.

Tristan Beck

The Giants got Tristan Beck in exchange for Mark Melancon years ago and the Stanford product has at times looked like a decent arm for San Francisco. He was once thought of as a starter but never showed that he had the stuff to be a late-inning arm so he’s sort of been in a long-inning, low-leverage role for some time.

He has a 7.07 ERA this season and the Giants would be better served giving his 40-man roster spot to someone else who might be able to be a better piece of the bullpen.

Seth Lonsway

The Giants called Seth Lonsway up briefly this year when they needed some more innings. He’s probably not a guy they feel is going to be part of next year’s bullpen so expect him to be on the cutting room floor at some point.

There are going to be a lot more moves like the Bivens one going forward which is going to be necessary as the Giants try to build a new bullpen. They obviously didn’t do enough last offseason so expect them to be very active on the waiver wire going forward as they attempt to get some solid arms.
