Rookie SF Giants outfielder may have the exact freaky energy the team needs

He could be perfect on a team that has lacked energy at times.

The SF Giants have been on an absolute tear as of late, winning eight of their last nine games and rekindling hope for the playoffs. In the process, rookie outfielder Drew Gilbert has provided a unique energy the team has sorely missed.

For a team that looked simply dreadful for so long, they have seemingly flipped the script and now look like a team hellbent on snagging a Wild Card spot. In Monday's contest against the Colorado Rockies, Gilbert had the best game of his young big league career going 4-for-4 with a home run and two runs driven in.

He also provided another legendary picture when third baseman Matt Chapman grabbed him by the throat in the dugout following the homer:

Drew Gilbert is providing a weird, necessary energy for SF Giants

This comes on the heels of his memorable moment in San Diego when the team was belting homers and he delivered a reaction for the ages on the top step of the dugout:

Something about this dude and home runs triggers the desire to let out some sort of primal scream. To the uninitiated it may be off-putting, but for a Giants team that has been in need of some energy and weirdness all year it is a welcome development.

The Giants acquired Gilbert in the trade that sent Tyler Rogers to the New York Mets. Gilbert had some memorable moments early on with the Giants, including a face plant catch and a weird first major league hit, but it seems he is finally starting to find his stride at the plate.

On the season in 18 games he has 12 hits including two doubles, a triple, and two homers as well as nine runs batted in in 46 at-bats. He has yet to record a walk while striking out 10 times which is something he will have to improve upon but when he does things with the bat it is undeniable that he provides a jolt to the team.

The team has been lacking the weirdo energy that he brings to the table for some time now. Perhaps not since the days of Hunter Pence has the team had a weirdo who can get pumped up and provide energy to the rest of the team with their play. I mean weirdo in the best way possible as Pence was a lovable and goofy weirdo who perfectly fit in with the ethos of San Francisco. Maybe Gilbert is trending in that direction as well.

He figures to share time with Luis Matos in the outfield the rest of this season so it will be interesting to see if the 24-year-old can continue to give the team a jolt both with his play as well as his buoyant energy.
