On paper, the SF Giants had a fairly unremarkable 81-81 season. It might seem like it was boring or uneventful going just off the record, but fans who followed every step along the way know it was anything but that.

There were plenty of oddities and curiosities and strange occurrences, so let's take a dive into some of the peculiar things that happened for the Giants this year.

Strange things that happened for the SF Giants in their 2025 season

The Athletic recently compiled a list of the strange things that happened in baseball in 2025 and the Giants pop up a number of times.

Rafael Devers' home run trot

In September in Colorado the Giants were making an unexpected push for the playoffs. Rafael Devers blasted a home run off Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland in the first inning and watched it for a little too long in Freeland's mind which led to the benches clearing.

Devers' home run trot took nearly nine minutes to complete and third baseman Matt Chapman and shortstop Willy Adames were both ejected which meant the Giants had to get creative and trot out an infield that was wholly different than the one on the lineup card to start a game which is a rare occurence indeed.

Robbie Ray's rare win

A fun early-season win for the Giants came against the New York Yankees in a rain-soaked game in April. The game lasted just six innings and was called due to the rain which resulted in Robbie Ray being declared the winning pitcher even though he only threw four innings when typically a starter has to pitch at least five innings to qualify for a win.

Yastrzemski vs. Kelly

Mike Yastrzemski homered off Arizona Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly in a July game between the Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks, and then he homered off him again a month later after he had been traded to the Kansas City Royals and Kelly had been traded to the Texas Rangers.

Yaz has a chance to take him deep again next season as he signed with the Atlanta Braves and Kelly signed with the D-backs.

Rogers Twins trade madness

The Giants traded Taylor Rogers before the 2025 season began which broke up the Rogers twins, but then both Taylor and Tyler Rogers were traded on the same day at the trade deadline. Taylor's journey was not done as he was traded yet again.

Two balls at once

A game at Oracle Park in June saw a fan throw a ball onto the field. The ball nearly hit catcher Patrick Bailey at home plate right in the middle of a play at the plate in one of the more bizarre occurrences one has seen at Oracle Park. The fan was reportedly never identified.

Inside-the-park walk-off

Bailey's inside-the-park walk-off homer was remarkable and is an incredibly rare feat, especially for a catcher. It probably only could have happened at Oracle Park where the brick wall and unique configurations allowed the ball to get away from everyone for long enough that Bailey was able to score standing up.

81-81 may not seem all that exciting, but as far as mediocre seasons go the Giants had a pretty interesting one in 2025.
