Who will be the general manager of the SF Giants under Buster Posey?
Who will be Buster's right-hand person?
The SF Giants made a big move on Monday in firing their president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi and replacing him with franchise legend Buster Posey. There are many questions, but one is who will be Buster's general manager?
Who will Buster Posey choose as his general manager for the SF Giants
With Buster in this role, he will be the chief decision maker in the front office. He will have the final say on big moves. However, it is important who a leader surrounds themself with. Who Buster chooses as his general manager will say a lot about the type of leader he wants to be in the front office.
Let's briefly break down some names who could serve as Buster's right-hand person in the front office.
Option 1: Play it safe
If Buster does not want to rock the boat too much, he could retain the services of current general manager Pete Putila. Putila served as assistant general manager for the Houston Astros from 2019-2022 before he was hired by the Giants to be their general manager after Scott Harris departed to become president of baseball operations for the Detroit Tigers. He is experienced in the front office, but Buster may want to bring in his own person to represent a true clean break with the prior administration.
Option 2: Clean break
If Buster wants a fresh start, he could opt for someone like Kim Ng. The general manager of the Miami Marlins from 2021-2023 helped the team reach the playoffs in 2023. Her name was mentioned as a potential replacement for Zaidi. She may not love the idea of becoming second fiddle, especially since it was the reorganization of the Marlins front office that would have made her second in command that led to her leaving the organization. At the very least, as former Giants beat writer Henry Schulman noted on X, Buster should give her a call to gauge her interest.
Option 3: A Familiar Face
Another name that Schulman threw out on X is David Bell, the recently fired manager of the Cincinnati Reds. Giants fans will remember that Bell scored the winning run in the 2002 NLCS and was the Willie Mac Award winner for the team that year. Things did not work out with the Reds, but Bell seems to be a smart baseball guy who could be valuable in the front office. Plus, Posey may value the fact that Bell is a former player and as a manager lives more in the world of feel and trusting your eyes rather than living and dying by FanGraphs projections.
These are just a few names that Posey could potentially consider for the general manager role and there are plenty of other names that will be a part of the process. This will probably be the first big decision Buster makes in his new role and could tell us a lot about the type of president of baseball operations he will be.
