SF Giants president of baseball operation Farhan Zaidi is on the hot seat. If the Giants do not make the postseason this year, there is a fair chance he will be let go. If he is, his obvious successor would be former Marlins GM Kim Ng.
SF Giants have an obvious replacement for Farhan Zaidi if he is let go
It is no secret that Zaidi is on the hot seat. Many considered him lucky to have avoided being fired after last season. While he deserves credit for being aggressive in free agency and making some big moves, those moves have largely not panned out thus far.
If the Giants remain on their current course and have another mediocre season where they finish around .500 and miss the playoffs, it would be inexcusable. He has been the President of Baseball Operations for the Giants since 2018. In that time, the Giants have only made the playoffs once back in 2021 which is also the only time the club has finished over .500 under his tenure.
If the mediocrity continues the rest of this season, the Giants will more than likely be forced to make a change. If they do so, the obvious choice would be Kim Ng.
Ng has spent a very long time in MLB front offices, working in the Yankees organization with GM Brian Cashman as well as spending time in the Dodgers organization. She was also the GM of the Miami Marlins from 2021-2023.
Ng helped lead the Marlins to an 84-78 record last season which earned them a Wild Card spot and their best record in over a decade. To reward her for this, the Marlins basically decided to restructure their baseball operations department to limit her power and influence in decision making. This caused her to leave the Marlins because she disagreed with this restructuring of the front office.
Call me crazy, but it seems like she was doing a pretty good job. She helped the team have their first winning record since 2009 and yet it was almost like she was punished for that which is unfair.
Ng has the experience and the track record to be a great front office decision maker. The Giants should hire her to be the chief decision maker in the front office if they move on from Zaidi. Whether that means she is general manger or assumes the same title Zaidi currently has doesn't matter, but she should be the one calling the shots.
The Giants are on pace for another season of mediocrity. If that continues, Zaidi should be gone and Ng should be the one to replace him. She will likely receive interest from other teams, but the Giants should prioritize her as she is the best one to shake things up in San Francisco.
