The SF Giants called up two players on Sunday to fill out their roster for September. These two players are the pitcher Tristan Beck and the catcher Blake Sabol. It will be great to see Beck back in the majors.

Back in the day, dugouts got very crowded in September. You used to be able to call up a lot of minor league players to give some of your players a break late in the year. Now, rosters just expand to 28 from 26 so it is not a massive expansion.

Yet, it is still important for the Giants to gain these two extra roster spots and it makes a lot of sense the two areas they decided to get some depth in.

Pitching depth will be especially important for the team going forward because of Robbie Ray's injury and the potential limitations for the young starters Kyle Harrison and Hayden Birdsong. That is why calling up Beck makes a lot of sense because he can do just about anything for the Giants. He can start games, he can come in in long relief, and he could even potentially pitch late in games if needed.

Beck is coming off a scary injury earlier this year where he had an aneurysm in his throwing arm. He had to have surgery to get the anuerysm removed and did not start pitching in the minors again until recently. In his 5 rehab starts he pitched 13 and 2/3 innings and gave up 12 earned runs. It may take some time for him to settle in, but it is great to see him healthy again.

Blake Sabol has been up and down a bit this season for the Giants. He has been called up at times when there were injuries at catcher and has done well, recording 10 hits in 32 at-bats, but has spent the majority of the year in Triple-A Sacramento where he is hitting .240/.336/.380 with 10 home runs and 49 RBI.

Sabol has proven himself to be a respectable hitter, but his defense at the catcher position has akways been in question. Perhaps we will see if he has made any big improvements to his defense in his September stint with the club. This move is certainly designed to give Patrick Bailey a bit of a break behind the plate where he is very valuable but has also been used a ton. The Giants probably want to keep him as fresh as they can going into 2025 given this season is already lost.

These two moves give the Giants key depth in two areas where they really need it. It also provides an opportunity for Sabol and Beck to audition for next year's team so we will see if they can impress in the final month of the season.
