SF Giants pitcher Tristan Beck was projected to be the team's 5th starter going into this year. Then, he had a very scary injury that involved an aneurysm in his right throwing arm. He has now begun a rehab assignment which is great news.
Tristan Beck begins rehab assignment after scary injury
If you can remember back to the offseason, after the pursuit of Ohtani and Yamamoto failed and it seemed like the only major addition was going to be Jung Hoo Lee, there was a time when the strategy for the starting rotation was: Let the kids pitch.
The projected Giants rotation was looking like Logan Webb, Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, Keaton Winn, and Tristan Beck. However, a wrench was thrown into those plans after Beck was diagnosed with an aneurysm in his arm. Thankfully, the Giants ended up getting Blake Snell after that to shore up the rotation, but Beck had a long road to get back on the mound.
The Giants acquired Beck, a Stanford product, in a trade with the Atlanta Braves back in 2019 where they got rid of Mark Melancon which remains one of the niftier moves of the Farhan Zaidi era. Beck did well for the Giants last season, posting a 3.92 ERA in 85 innings. The Giants were going to let him be a starter this season which is what he was in the minor leagues before the injury derailed things.
Now, Beck is set to pitch 3 innings in Triple-A Sacramento tonight for his rehab assignment. It will probably take him a little time to build up his arm strength again, but it is awesome to see Beck so close to returning to the big leagues after such a big and scary setback. Who knows, the Giants may even ending up relying on him coming down the stretch especially if rookie Hayden Birdsong continues to struggle.
Beck's year has not gone according to plan, but he is finally back on track and could make a push to rejoin the Giants especially if he looks sharp in his minor league rehab starts. No matter what, it is just great that he is pitching again and let's hope he can remain healthy for a long time after having to go through so much.
