The SF Giants dropped the second game of the series on Saturday night by a score of 4-3. They will look to Keaton Winn to help clinch the series win on Sunday afternoon. It will not be an easy task with Jared Jones on the mound for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
SF Giants probable pitchers & starting lineups vs. Pittsburgh Pirates, April 28
Winn is performing like a mid-rotation arm and the numbers seem to back it up. In five starts, he has posted a 3.54 ERA, 3.98 FIP, 1.03 WHIP, 7.4 K/9, and a 2.56 SO/W ratio. This includes an excellent 58.9 percent ground ball rate.
The 26-year-old pitcher is not going to tally high strikeout totals but he does a nice job of keeping the ball on the ground. If a pitcher is not going to get the strikeout, then getting a ground ball is the next best outcome. His pitch mix is different from Logan Webb. Winn relies on an above-average splitter to record outs, but both Winn and Webb do an excellent job of inducing weak contact.
Who it hot?
Tyler Fitzgerald is off to a solid start on the year. He has posted a .773 OPS with four extra-base hits, including one home run, in 31 plate appearances. Plus, he is one of the few base-stealing threats on the roster as he has swiped four bags in four chances.
Who are the SF Giants facing?
The Giants will have their hands full with Jared Jones on the mound. The rookie pitcher is off to an excellent start, posting a 2.79 ERA with 39 strikeouts against only four walks in 29 innings. Jones is tough to hit and will not yield too many free passes, but he is prone to the long ball (1.6 HR/9).
