Buster Posey's first week as SF Giants president of baseball operations is officially in the books. How long will he stay as the Giants' top executive?
SF Giants News: Buster Posey's contract, Bob Melvin's status, Jeremy Shelley
During Posey's introductory press conference, Giants chairman Greg Johnson revealed that Posey was under contract for three seasons. Typically, top front-office hires receive a contract of four or five years.
However, the short nature of Posey's contract does have an added layer of pressure for him to perform in his new role. That said, the former Giants catcher is also a minority owner, so the contract length may not mean much at all.
Bob Melvin's contract status
The seat may be unusually warm for Giants manager Bob Melvin in 2025. After a disappointing first season in charge, Melvin will be entering a potential lame-duck season. However, his contract does have language for 2026, which translates to some type of team option.
Despite ownership setting a franchise record by investing $250.8 million into the 2024 team, the Giants managed to increase last year's win total by one. That is just not enough return on investment with spending at that level.
This is hardly Melvin's fault as the disappointing season was a reflection of the organization as a whole. Though, it cannot be a comfortable position for the veteran manager at the moment given that the person who hired him, Farhan Zaidi, is no longer in charge. Typically, new front offices like to hire their own person to manage the team.
Assistant general manager Jeremy Shelley
Perhaps, Posey's first hire will be his most important. The longtime catcher does not have traditional experience in the front office, so he will need to lean on a general manager with a lot of experience. Posey highlighted the need to hire someone with a scouting background for this role.
Jon Morosi of The MLB Network mentioned Billy Owens and Scott Sharp of the Oakland A's and Kansas City Royals, respectively. Both have extensive scouting backgrounds with the latter playing a role in player development as well.
One internal name that could be considered is assistant general manager Jeremy Shelley. Greg Johnson volunteered his name as a candidate during Posey's introductory press conference earlier this week. Shelley began working for the Giants in 1996 and has held a number of roles in both scouting and evaluation.
