New SF Giants President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey made it very clear in his introductory press conference that his first decision will be hiring a general manager. This savvy A's executive fits what he is looking for.
Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area has mentioned the name Billy Owens as a potential GM candidate. Owens is currently assistant general manager of the A's, an organization he has been with for over 25 years.
This savvy A's executive would be the perfect GM for the SF Giants
Posey spoke about how he wants a GM with a scouting background and Owens fits that bill, serving as a scount within the A's organization on his rise to becoming assistant GM. He seems to be very well respected and is a San Jose native who obviously has extensive roots in the Bay Area with all of his time in Oakland.
Some may scoff at the notion of hiring someone from the A's organization with how dysfunctional that franchise has been, but the A's do have some decent talent on their team and certainly played the Giants tough late in the 2024 season so their front office is not completely inept when it comes to identifying talent.
He scouted and evaluated some of the more promising young players in the A's organization like Tyler Soderstrom and Zack Gelof.
It seems that Posey is going to serve as the face of the organization in this new role and will certainly be involved in big decisions and presenting a cohesive vision of what Giants baseball will look like going forward. That means that the GM role would be perfect for someone with the experience of Owens who has decades in the front office but also is a former player in the minor leagues. He has seen the game from every angle and can focus on more of the day-to-day tasks and minutiae of the job while Buster has more of a front-facing role.
Posey needs a right hand man, and it seems like Owens would be a great candidate to fill that role. There is a lot of excitement right now amongst the fanbase and hiring Owens would signal that the organization is surrounding Buster with experienced old hands who will help guide him in this new role.
