Can he be the savior of the franchise twice?

Buster Posey saved the SF Giants on the field 15 years ago. Now, he has the opportunity to save the team from the front office. He was incredibly successful as a savior on the field but it remains to be seen how he will fare in his new role.

The Giants just finished their third straight season of mediocre baseball. The last time they were truly fun to watch was when Posey was on the team back in 2021, leading the team to their historic 107-win campaign. Since his retirement following that season, Giants baseball has been dull, boring, and uninspiring for the most part.

You could say similar things about the years 2005-2009 for the Giants organization. Sure, they had stars like Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain emerge in those down years, but that did not change the fact that they were playing losing baseball. They began to turn things around in 2009 when they won 88 games, but they still missed out on the playoffs in all of those seasons. It was not until one Gerald Dempsey (aka Buster) was called up at the end of May in 2010 that the franchise's fortunes truly turned around for good.

Within 5 years of Buster being called up in 2010, the Giants had won their first 3 World Series championships since moving to San Francisco. Posey built a dynasty on the field and created memories that will last a lifetime.

Now, he has the chance to do all of that again.

In Buster's opening remarks at the press conference officially announcing that he would become the president of baseball operations, he spoke about the fact that baseball is a memory-making business. Posey wants to create a product on the field that will produce more of those memorable moments, the kind of moments where you will never forget where you were when they happened.

It is going to be a daunting task for Posey. He has no front office experience. The Giants are currently the 4th best team in their own division. One of those teams ahead of them is the Los Angeles Dodgers. The odds are not in his favor.

However, one could argue that they were not in his favor in 2010, 2012, or 2014 either and he still led the team to victory on all of those occassions.

This will not be an easy path for Buster. There will be mistakes and bumps in the road and perhaps a very steep learning curve. He is already a legend for changing the direction of the franchise 15 years ago with what he did on the field, but if he can now replicate that from the front office he can become something that we have truly never seen before in baseball.

The odds are long, but if Giants fans have learned one thing over the course of the past 15 years it is that you should never bet against Buster Posey.
