SF Giants fans will tell you that part of the joy of baseball season is listening to one of the best broadcast teams in baseball with Mike Krukow, Duane Kuiper, Jon Miller, and Dave Flemming. While they are still regarded as one of the best in baseball, Awful Announcing snubbed them out of the top spot.
SF Giants broadcast team snubbed out of top spot in baseball in latest poll
To no one's surprise, the Giants broadcast team has been rated as among the best over the past decade. In most years, they either finish in first place or second place. This includes a first-place finish in last year's poll.
The New York Mets' broadcast team consisting of Gary Cohen, Ron Darling, and Keith Hernandez finished in first this time around. Similar to the Giants, this group has often been rated as among the best in baseball, but this is the first time that they have finished in first place.
Awful Announcing does credit the Giants for adding some younger voices to the mix without a decline in quality. Shawn Estes, Hunter Pence, and Javier López are recognized for this.
Both Joe Ritzo and F. P. Santangelo are not mentioned, but they have been welcomed additions to the broadcast team as well, especially on the radio side. Ritzo does the play-by-play calls for the San Jose Giants, so he sees every Giants prospect before they even reach the majors.
On the other hand, Santangelo is an experienced voice as he previously worked on the broadcast team for the Washington Nationals. Plus, he brings an experienced baseball perspective as he was a major leaguer for seven seasons, including one year with San Francisco.
Of course, Mike Krukow, Duane Kuiper, Jon Miller, and Dave Flemming lead the group. Krukow and Kuiper have been calling Giants games for three decades. Their voices are synonymous with Giants baseball. Miller is an encyclopedia of basbeall knowledge, whereas Flemming's voice captures some of the game's best moments. They are all great and unique in their own way.
It should be mentioned that Miller did a tremendous job talking to the listeners after it was announced that Willie Mays passed away in June. Despite the game going on, Miller reflected on the life and legacy of Mays. In a lot of ways, it was a soothing voice during a tough time for baseball fans.
Baseball quantifies just about everything at this point. It is hard to quantify the quality of the broadcast team, but when you listen to Giants baseball, you just know that they are the best in the business.
