2 young SF Giants players who deserve an extended look when rosters expand

2. Tristan Beck

With Robbie Ray landing on the injured list, the SF Giants might need to plug another starter into the rotation. They could go with bullpen games in Ray's absence, but with expanded rosters, this feels like an opportunity to give someone an extended look.

Admittedly, the Giants could go with Mason Black in this spot. The 24-year-old pitcher has struggled badly in his brief stint in the majors this season. That said, it is difficult to find any type of consistency as a young spot starter in the majors.

On the other hand, Tristan Beck suffered an aneurysm in his pitching arm in spring training. He is nearing a return after beginning a rehab assignment earlier in August.

Before the injury, Beck looked to be in line for one of the Opening Day rotation spots. He was coming off of a solid 2023 campaign in which he tallied a 3.92 ERA in 85 innings with San Francisco. Perhaps, it was a bit of a disappointment that he did not get a longer look out of the rotation last season, especially as that unit experienced both injuries and underperformance.

There is still time for the 28-year-old hurler to make it back to a major league mound. Given that the Giants will add at least one pitcher with expanded rosters, Beck feels like an obvious candidate.
