New SF Giants manager Tony Vitello is filling out his coaching staff in coordination with San Francisco’s front office. One name who has seemed likely to return from the previous staff is Mark Hallberg, but his return is not a sure thing.

Per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area in his latest article, Buster Posey said of Hallberg: “He's one of those that we'd love to have back, but he has been kind of a popular guy with some other teams, as well. We're working through that."

SF Giants would like to keep Mark Hallberg although he is garnering interest from other teams

Hallberg was thought of as a potential successor to manager Bob Melvin after he was let go. Hallberg and Posey were teammates and roommates together at Florida State University and Hallberg has served as a coach with the Giants since the 2021 season.

He was originally an assistant coach but became the team’s third base coach in 2021, a role he stayed in through the 2023 season until he moved over to be the team’s first base coach after Melvin took over and made Matt Williams the third base coach.

After it was reported that Williams will not return in his role which makes sense after there was some scrutiny about the job he was doing during the 2025 season, it would make a lot of sense for the Giants to retain Hallberg and move him back over to be the team’s third base coach again.

He has experience in the role and did a good job. Plus, he has familiarity with a lot of the players on the team so it would be nice to have a coach to maintain a little bit of continuity for the players. The Giants do have a few coaches who are going to return, but Hallberg would be a wise guy to retain given the fact that third base coach is an important job.

However, as Posey said, it seems like other teams have interest in him as well. If another place offers him a bench coach role or something more appetizing than whatever role he would have in San Francisco, he could not be blamed for taking that opportunity.

Still, given Hallberg’s relationship with Posey and the experience he brings to the table the Giants should make an effort to keep him around. They already lost pitching coach J.P. Martinez, so they should not drag their feet and let the same thing happen to Hallberg.
