It's that fun time of the MLB offseason where spring training is not quite here but minor moves are still being made. All SF Giants fans can really do other than follow Framber Valdez rumors is take a look at where some old friends have landed.

Derek Law, who pitched for the Giants from 2016 to 2018, has landed with the Arizona Diamondbacks on a minor league deal. He is back in the National League West after all these years.

Former SF Giants reliever Derek Law lands with D-backs

Law debuted in 2016 and was one of the lone bright spots in the bullpen for San Francisco. The Giants just could not close out games that year but Law put up a very respectable 2.13 ERA in 55 innings pitched and endeared himself to fans.

Unfortunately, his numbers tapered off a bit after that as he pitched to a 5.06 ERA in 41 appearances in 2017 and then things got even worse with a 7.43 ERA in seven outings in 2018.

Law ended up being designated for assignment in 2019 and was cleared waivers but was eventually included in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays that brought Kevin Pillar to San Francisco.

After that trade, Law bounced around from team to team and was a pretty decent reliever with an ERA in the 4.00 range most seasons.

That was until 2024 when he had his best year since his rookie season. In 75 appearances and 90 innings pitched Law had a 2.60 ERA with the Washington Nationals.

However, Law was unable to back that season up as he dealt with forearm issues early in 2025 that essentially shut him down for the rest of the year.

He hit free agency and now Arizona has decided to take a flier on the 35-year-old Pittsburgh native. Maybe he can show that 2024 was not a fluke.

Law made some sense as a potential Giants pickup based on the type of relievers they have added this offseason. Law is coming off an injury which basically applies to every bullpen arm the Giants picked up and Buster Posey has familiarity with him as he caught him during his time with the Giants so a reunion would have been neat.

Nonetheless, Law is back in the NL west so perhaps he will make the team in Arizona and the Giants will get to see him at some point this season.
