SF Giants bullpen remodel could include member of 2016 bullpen collapse

Why not add another familiar face into the mix?

The SF Giants are clearly opting for a bullpen remodel on a budget. This approach has its advantages, and former Giant reliever Derek Law could potentially factor into that equation as he is a free agent coming off an injury.

Law was with the Giants back in 2016 and lasted with the team through 2018 before he was part of a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays that brought Kevin Pillar to the Giants.

SF Giants could reunite with familiar face in Derek Law

2016 was his best season as he had a 2.13 ERA in 61 games. Even though he was a rookie, by the end of that season manager Bruce Bochy was having to rely on him more and more as that bullpen struggled to shut the door so often.

Unfortunately, Law was part of the bullpen collapse that occurred in Game 4 of the 2016 NLDS which ended the team's season and brought an end to the Even Year Dynasty.

After the Giants moved on from Law, he bounced around a bit from team to team. He eventually wound up with the Washington Nationals and actually had his best season since that rookie year with San Francisco in 2024 when he had a 2.60 ERA in 75 appearances on the year.

Unfortunately, he missed all of the 2025 season due to injury and underwent surgery due to a partial tear of his flexor tendon. If all goes according to plan, he should be back in April or May.

The Giants have shown us they have a type when it comes to relievers this offseason. They like 'em injured as evidenced by the signings of Sam Hentges, Gregory Santos, and Jason Foley, three pitchers who are all coming off injury-plagued seasons.

Law fits that bill perfectly as a guy coming off a solid year the last time he pitched while also coming off injury which lowers his price tag. He could be had on a minor league contract for cheap and could factor into the team's bullpen plans whenever he is healthy.

President of baseball operations Buster Posey has familiarity with him as he caught him his first few big league seasons and there are certainly more controversial former relievers Posey could bring back into the fold.

Law fits the team's M.O. when it comes to relievers this offseason, so maybe a reunion could be in the cards.
