He may not be having a strong year offensively, but SF Giants catcher Patrick Bailey sure does come up in the clutch against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bailey reminded everyone of that on Wednesday night as he hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning and had a very cool bat flip.

Bailey, and pretty much everyone in the ballpark, knew it was gone right off the bat. It was certainly reminiscent of the walk-off grand slam he hit last season against the Dodgers which was one of the more iconic moments of 2025. That was actually the last home run Bailey hit in a regular season game before Wednesday night. Bailey hit both of them as a right-handed hitter even though he typically does better as a left-handed hitter. He was even wearing the same iconic bandana depicting George Washington crossing the Delaware.
Patrick Bailey continues to own the Dodgers
There was some chatter earlier this month that Bailey should abandon hitting from the right side of the plate. That was actually his first hit of the season against a left-handed pitcher as Daniel Susac has seen most at-bats against lefties this season for the Giants but is currently on the IL. Had Susac been healthy, he probably would have been the guy at the plate in that situation.
Ultimately it worked out pretty well for the Giants. Bailey’s numbers in the season still aren’t pretty. He’s hitting .155/.222/.207 with one homer and four runs batted in. Susac certainly made a strong case for more playing time before he got hurt, but Bailey reminded everyone just how clutch he can be.
Bailey doesn’t get a lot of hits, but he has always seemed to have a knack for the dramatics. Probably the two most exciting moments of 2025 were his walk-off grand slam against the Dodgers and the walk-off inside-the-park homer he hit against the Philadelphia Phillies. If he’s only going to get a couple hits, he might as well save them for the biggest moments.
Maybe this big homer can be a catalyst for Bailey. Susac is going to be out for three weeks so Bailey is going to get the majority of the starts behind the plate in that time. He needed a confidence boost in the worst way and that homer on Wednesday night may be just what the doctor ordered.
He’s always been a solid presence behind the plate with his defense, but his cold bat is what has prevented him from being a truly elite player. He’ll probably never be a strong offensive player, but if he could at least be average that could make a world of difference. He’s a big reason why the Giants won on Wednesday so let’s hope he can build upon it going forward.
