The good times continue for the SF Giants minor league system. Earlier this week, Charlie McDaniel and Darien Smith were recognized as the April 2026 Pitcher of the Month for the Northwest League and Eastern League, respectively.

The Giants knew that the Eugene Emeralds would put together a competitive roster this year. This year's roster features many of the same players who propelled the San Jose Giants to a California League championship just last season.
The lineup features Dakota Jordan, Jakob Christian, Zander Darby, Carlos Gutierrez, and Walker Martin. All of them spent a good bit of time in San Jose last year. Gavin Kilen and Trevor Cohen were late addition after being selected in the 2025 draft.
On the pitching side, Eugene has gotten some really strong starts from Yunior Marte, Tyler Switalski, and McDaniel. Jacob Bresnahan recently returned from the injured list and has made two starts.
The Emeralds are 22-6 to start the year, and McDaniel has anchored the rotation. He has posted a 0.87 ERA with 24 strikeouts and five walks across 20.2 innings.
On the other hand, the Richmond Flying Squirrels have been one of the biggest surprises in minor league baseball this season. For years, Richmond has been hung out to dry when it comes to talent because it is on the East Coast. In recent years, the team's top prospects have merely passed through the Eastern League.
Last year, Richmond was in last place in the Southwest Division with a 56-79 record. This year, it has been an entirely different story. Their 21-6 record is the best in the Eastern League by far.
The offense has led the way, as that lineup averages 7.44 runs per game. Scott Bandura, Jonah Cox, Parks Harber, Charlie Szykowny, and Sabin Ceballos have been just some of the names to anchor that unit.
On the pitching side, Darien Smith has been the team's best starter. He has recorded a 1.08 ERA with 23 strikeouts and nine walks in 25 frames this year.
Smith joined the Giants organization as an undrafted free agent during the 2024 season. He spent his final two college seasons at Southeastern University. In his final year, Smith pitched to a 1.87 ERA in 96.1 innings, but his name was not called. Smith is another example of the Giants finding a player through the undrafted channel who can help out the organization.
