On Sunday, Jacob Bresnahan made his 2026 debut. The top SF Giants missed the first month of the year due to an injury, but collected 3.2 frames for the Eugene Emeralds in a 3-1 loss to the Hillsboro Hops.
Top SF Giants pitching prospect returns to game action for Eugene Emeralds
The Emeralds have hardly missed a beat in Bresnahan’s absence.
The lineup has been led by Dakota Jordan, Zander Darby, Gavin Kilen, and Walker Martin. Jordan continues to flash a lot of tools, even if the strikeout rate remains high.
The Giants knew that Martin was a projectable bat when they selected him in the second round of the 2023 draft out of Eaton High School. He has one of the most fluid swings in the organization, and the power is playing better than it has in the past.
On the pitching side, Yunipr Marte, Tyler Switalski, and Hunter Dryden have led the way. Switalski has been a surprise jolt, posting a 1.00 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 19 innings so far this year.
The Emeralds’ rotation is getting another addition with Bresnahan. The southpaw pitching prospect anchored a San Jose Giants rotation that won the California League in 2025.
Bresnahan recorded a 2.60 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 12.0 K/9, and a 2.88 SO/W rate across 93 frames last season. His strikeout rate was among the highest in the minor leagues. That type of quality often serves as a good predictor of success at the next level.Â
The left-handed pitcher only got better as the season went on and was recognized as the California League Pitcher of the Year.Â
On the mound, Bresnahan features a low-to-mid 90’s fastball that gets late, riding movement up in the zone. He pairs it with a changeup that sits in the mid-80’s and a slider that remains a work in progress. Bresnahan tunnels his fastball and changeup well, so that opposing hitters do not recognize the change in arm speed. Plus, the movement profile for either pitch complements the other by changing the sightlines.
Bresnahan breezed through the first three innings of his 2026 debut, but ran into trouble in the fourth inning. He was also on a tight pitch count, as he only tallied 56 pitches. By the end of his outing, he had allowed two earned runs on four strikeouts and two walks in 3.2 frames. The results on Sunday were not nearly as important as just having him back on the mound. Eugene hopes that he provides a boost to a quality rotation.
