SF Giants outfield prospect Bo Davidson was among the 19 players to earn a non-roster camp invite. With the World Baseball Classic (WBC) taking place this spring, there should be plenty of at-bats to go around for the 24-year-old outfielder.
One SF Giants outfield prospect who should get an extended look in the Cactus League
A lot of those at-bats will also be allocated to the players competing for the fourth outfielder role. Drew Gilbert, Luis Matos, Jerar Encarnación, and Will Brennan will headline that competition.
The Giants added Brennan to a split contract last week. The left-handed-hitting outfielder brings a skill to the table that the front office likes in a hitter.
Brennan, along with Gilbert, have minor league options remaining. To some degree, they have overlapping profiles, but Gilbert is a more capable defender at all three outfield positions. Brennan is passable in the corners, but probably should not see extended time in center field.
Matos and Encarnación are out of minor league options, so they will be competing to make the Opening Day roster. There is a good chance that they see more time than just about any player in camp, as the Giants will want to evaluate as many at-bats as they can get before making a decision.
While the WBC is taking place, none of the outfielders mentioned will have to compete with Heliot Ramos, Jung Hoo Lee, or Harrison Bader for playing time. All three outfielders will be in the WBC, with Lee being named the team captain for South Korea.
That will open up a lot of at-bats for the fourth outfielder competition, as well as for Bo Davidson to make a favorable impression in camp. The Giants added Davidson as an undrafted free agent out of Caldwell Community College in 2023. Since then, he has emerged as one of the Giants' top prospects, with MLB Pipeline ranking him as the No. 5 prospect in the system.
The 2025 season was another strong year for Davidson. He slashed .281/.376/.468 (137 wRC+) with 18 home runs, 70 RBI, and 76 runs in 522 plate appearances. This includes a respectable .713 OPS in 187 plate appearances with the Richmond Flying Squirrels to finish the year. There is a good chance that Davidson returns to the Eastern League to start this season.
Before that happens, the left-handed bat has a chance to make a good impression with the Giants' coaching staff. Depending on what happens to Luis Matos and Jerar Encarnación at the end of camp, outfield depth in the upper minors could thin out quickly. This could open up an opportunity for Davidson to move quickly through the upper minors if he performs well.
