One-for-one SF Giants-Mariners trade should be a slam dunk for Buster Posey

The MLB trade deadline is almost here and the expectation is for the SF Giants to be active in the coming days. The Seattle Mariners are an obvious trade partner and one deal in particular would be a slam dunk for Buster Posey.

There’s rumors suggesting that the Mariners have interest in outfielder Heliot Ramos which makes sense as they are looking to add some offense ahead of the deadline. The Giants need some starting pitching and the Mariners just so happen to be open to trading from their starter depth.

A one-for-one trade of Ramos for Emerson Hancock makes so much sense and the Giants should be all over it.

Ramos gives the Mariners the bat they sorely need. Even though he’s been banged up this season and his stats are down a little compared to past years, he is still a legitimate power threat and hit over 20 homers in 2024 and 2025.

He’s not a rental either so he will help the Mariners beyond just this season which teams will likely value even more given the uncertainty surrounding next season with a lockout looming.

Hancock would be an ideal addition to San Francisco’s rotation. He has a 3.26 ERA on the season in 20 starts with 102 strikeouts and just 27 walks in 110 innings pitched. If the Giants go into next year with him as the team’s No. 3 or No. 4 starter they’d have to feel pretty good about things.

Assuming Logan Webb and Landen Roupp remain with the team, next season’s rotation would at least have three solid arms. Perhaps if they go out and sign one legit free agent (Kevin Gausman reunion anyone?) and then the No. 5 spot goes to a young starter like Carson Whisenhunt or Blade Tidwell that would make for a respectable starting five.

We know how reluctant the Giants are to spend money on pitching which is why a Ramos for Hancock trade is too good to pass up. Yes, it would sting to give up a solid hitter and former All-Star but at least they’d be getting a guy who has proven he can succeed at the big league level rather than just rolling the dice on a prospect.

If the Giants can pull that deal off the team would be better off now and going forward so Posey and the front office should get it done.
