It is no secret that the SF Giants are struggling on offense. While the team still has a winning record, their bats tend to run cold at times. If they are looking for a potential spark on offense, calling up outfielder Marco Luciano seems like an obvious move.
Luciano has hit fairly well overall in Triple-A Sacramento this season after showing both positive and negative signs early on. In 38 games he is slashing .238/.358/.427 with seven home runs and 24 runs batted in. His seven homers lead the River Cats and he recently hit a grand slam.
Marco Luciano seems like obvious next call up for SF Giants
The former top prospect for the Giants had a rough 2024 in which he had to change positions and was called up to the majors and sent back down several times which prevented him from getting any sort of rhythm at the plate.
Now Luciano is an outfielder after his defensive woes in the infield last season became too difficult to stomach. It seems he is in a better place than he was last season which could mean he is finally ready to help the team out at the big league level.
The only problem is that if the Giants were to call him up right now he would not get many at-bats. Jung Hoo Lee and Heliot Ramos are going to be starting in center field and left field respectively almost every day and Mike Yastrzemski is going to get the lion's share of the starts in right field thanks to how he has swung the bat this season in addition to his defense and baserunning.
That means that it is probably going to take an injury in order for Luciano to get called up. The Giants could demote Luis Matos to Triple-A and call up Luciano, but Matos is second on the depth chart in center field behind Lee and things would get a bit more complicated if he was sent down.
Plsu, Matos has had better at-bats recently so the Giants probably do not want to demote him right as he is starting to get a bit better feel at the plate.
Yet, the team's offensive struggles cannot be denied. They only mustered one run in each of the first two games against the Minnesota Twins on Friday and Saturday which caused them to lose two winnable games. Maybe calling up a guy who is hitting the ball out of the ball park in Sacramento is what is needed to shake things up.
We will have to wait and see what prompts the team's next call up especially since the Giants have largely maintained the same roster since Opening Day and have only called up position players due to injuries. But if and when they do make a move, Luciano seems like the most obvious candidate to receive a promotion.
