Monday night's win over the Twins was a banner night for SF Giants scout

Before Monday night's 5-2 win over the Minnesota Twins, the SF Giants called up Bo Davidson for his major league debut. The win turned out to be a banner night for Giants scout Paul Faulk.

In some ways, this year has been a win for the Giants' amateur scouting team. Davidson, along with Turner Hill and Trent Harris, have all made their major league debut this season. What do they all have in common? They joined the Giants as undrafted free agents in 2023.

That channel has proven to be a nice feeder to the farm system for San Francisco. In addition to the trio mentioned above, Parks Harber and Hayden Jatczak originally joined pro ball as undrafted free agents. Harber signed with the New York Yankees in 2024 before being shipped to the Giants in a deal that sent Camilo Doval to New York.

In an odd twist, Doval was designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday. He was due for a raise from his $6.1 million salary this year, but he was likely going to be a non-tender candidate.

Monday night's win for the Giants was a win in the standings and a win for scouting. Part-time scout Paul Faulk was credited with scouting and signing Bo Davidson and Trent Harris. Both players played college baseball in North Carolina, which has become a scouting hotbed for the Giants.

SF Giants scout thought of only one player when he first saw Bo Davidson

In particular, Maria Guardado of MLB.Com told a great story about how Faulk scouted Davidson, believing that he had just found the junior college version of Barry Bonds. This was a lofty compliment for someone who has been a baseball scout for well over three decades.

Faulk and area scout DJ Jauss could not pass up an opportunity to see him play, and he signed shortly thereafter. Of course, that was not the only player in that area the Giants signed. They also added Harris as an undrafted free agent out of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Harris was a two-way player in college, and has relatively little mileage on his arm. He also has major league bloodlines. His father, Greg Harris, pitched in the majors for eight seasons, most notably with the San Diego Padres.

In Davidson's first at-bat, he laced a single to right field on the ninth pitch. Harris closed out the game to secure the victory. Faulk moved to the Kansas City Royals, but he helped sign a few more undrafted free agents for the Giants this summer.
