MLB insider reports on SF Giants manager Tony Vitello's status for 2027

Will Tony Vitello be back with the SF Giants in 2027? According to Robert Murray of FanSided, the plan is for Vitello to return next season.

Murray spoke to sources around the league, who believe that the rookie manager is not in danger of losing his job. That could change next year, as Murray believes that the club will have increased expectations. If a team does not meet those expectations, whether fair or not, the manager and his coaching staff are often the first to go.

It has been a disastrous year for the Giants on nearly every front. While it would be unfair to scapegoat a manager after a season like this, Vitello is not totally blameless either.

The Giants knew that there would be a steep learning curve for Vitello in his adjustment to pro ball. That has been true, as Vitello has been criticized for how he has managed the clubhouse, along with some of his in-game moves, albeit with a flawed roster.

The roster issues extend well beyond Vitello. One of the most notable issues has been the bullpen. The front office did little to address a unit that was a liability at the end of last year, and that has played out about as poorly as everyone expected. The bullpen has posted a 4.22 ERA, which is 20th in baseball. Plus, they have allowed 36 percent of inherited runners to score. The league average rate is 32 percent.

Vitello made some questionable bullpen moves earlier in the year. That said, he has little to work with on that front.

In terms of managing the clubhouse, Vitello had to deal with Rafael Devers publicly challenging a decision a pinch run him. While that decision was the correct one, Vitello did little to address the core issue.

While Vitello may not be on the hot seat, the same may not be true for his coaching staff. In a season like this, the front office usually influences changes to the coaching staff to try to get better results. They may not force that issue, but given how the pitching staff has performed, it feels like something has to change.

Plus, Vitello may be safe for another reason. Buster Posey fired Bob Melvin at the end of last season after exercising his team option for 2026. The Giants do not want to be in a position where they have a third manager in as many seasons.
