Tony Vitello may not be on the hot seat, but these 3 SF Giants coaches should be

It’s been a historically bad season for the SF Giants, but don’t expect a managerial change anytime soon. Buster Posey confirmed that Tony Vitello will be coming back next season which is probably the right decision because cutting bait on him after one year would be a really bad look for the organization.

Vitello has been far from perfect, but what would one expect from a rookie manager coming straight from the college ranks who is presiding over a very flawed roster? Even Mike Krukow thinks Vitello deserves a second season and expects him to be improved in year two.

That doesn’t mean the rest of the coaching staff is safe, though. There are going to have to be some sort of changes after such a tough year so let’s dive into three coaches who should be on the hot seat.

3 SF Giants coaches who might be gone after 2026 season

Justin Meccage

This is also pitching coach Justin Meccage’s first year in his current role and the Giants may want to look into a more experienced option. While Meccage did not put together the team’s lackluster pitching staff, it’s fair to say that the coaching staff has not exactly gotten the most out of the team’s arms.

This is likely a case where the Giants need better talent and better coaches so the Giants would be smart to reevaluate the entire pitching operation in the offseason.

Frank Anderson

Naturally, if the Giants were to move on from their pitching coach they’d also be wise to move on from their “Director of Major League Pitching” Frank Anderson.

Vitello brought him over from the University of Tennessee and it’s likely the adjustment from the college ranks to the big leagues has been just as jarring for him.

Maybe Anderson can have some sort of role with the organization but a return to Knoxville might be in order as the Giants try to sort out how to get the most out of their arms.

Shane Robinson

It’s fair to wonder how much impact a first base coach really has on a big league team. Yet, with how many times runners have forgotten how many outs there were or made puzzling mistakes on the bases this year there should probably be some sort of change made.

The decision to get Gary Pettis in as the third base coach after Hector Borg’s struggles in the role was a smart one and maybe Robinson, who was seemingly hired just because of his connection to Buster Posey at Florida State, should be swapped out for someone else who could help provide some more value.

We will see if any coaching changes actually do get made, but after such a bad year some things clearly need to change so moving on from these three guys may be a good place to start.
